Students enjoy 30 minutes of recess daily. Recess will be outside whenever possible. If it is raining or snowing, students will enjoy recess inside. If it is too hot or cold, recess will be modified. See below.
- Students will enjoy recess inside, if the wind chill or heat index, the "feels like" temperature, is 15°F or below or if it is above 100°F.
- Students will enjoy a 15 minute recess outside and a 15 minute recess inside, if the heat index or wind chill, the "feels like" temperature, is 16°F-32°F or 90°F-100°F.
- Students will enjoy a 30 minute recess outside, if the heat index or wind chill, the "feels like" temperature, is below 90°F and is 33°F and above, and it is not raining, *thundering, lightning, or snowing. *When thunder roars, go indoors.” See National Weather Service for guidance.
Please help your child dress for the weather. Label with your child's name his/her coat, jacket, gloves, mittens, and scarf.
National Weather Service Recommendations for Heat
If the heat index is 90 to 95 degrees, or if there is a heat advisory in effect, children should only be outside for short periods of time (15 -30 minutes or less). Time is based on the children's appearance and behaviors.
As the heat index increases so do health risks. Students should not have outdoor recess or physical education classes when the temperature or heat index is greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
