New Trails Early Learning Center special education teacher Megan Butler is a nominee for the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) Outstanding Beginning Teacher award for 2017.

Butler was nominated by her alma mater Rockhurst University. Butler is a December 2014 graduate of Rockhurst and received a Master’s in Education and double majored in Elementary Education and Special Education.

Missouri Outstanding Beginning Teachers are honored for their excellence in serving children during their first two years of service in school districts across Missouri. Butler will receive her award on March 29 at the MACTE spring conference in Columbia, Missouri.

New Trails Principal and Early Childhood Director Donna Denney said, “ Megan is a natural teacher. She forms strong relationships with staff, children, and their families.  Efficacy, passion, and dedicated, all describe Megan. No matter what the child needs or how many children need specialized plans or instruction, Megan meets those needs.”

Criteria for the Outstanding Beginning Teacher nomination and selection process include:

  • Feedback from faculty during the student’s teacher education program
  • Feedback from student teaching supervisor and cooperating teacher during student teaching
  • Letter of recommendation from the hiring principal regarding the performance of the student during their first year teaching.
  • Review of nominations by a committee comprised of faculty and staff at the University and school personnel
